The Manila City Council has launched a new initiative to provide free senior fitness programs for residents aged 60 and above, with classes currently being held at the Rizal Park, Intramuros, and the Manila City Hall grounds.
This program is particularly relevant now, as the city's active wellness culture continues to grow, with many residents seeking ways to stay healthy and engaged as they age. With the rising cost of living in Manila, it can be challenging for seniors to afford fitness classes or gym memberships, making this free program a valuable resource for the community. The council's initiative aims to promote healthy aging, prevent chronic diseases, and foster social connections among seniors.
In Manila, seniors can take advantage of free exercise classes, such as tai chi, yoga, and dance-based workouts, at various locations, including the Tondo Sports Complex, the Manila Zoo, and the Paco Park. The council has partnered with local organizations, such as the Manila Health Department and the Philippine Red Cross, to provide expert instruction and ensure the safety of participants. For example, the Barangay 412 zone in Quiapo has seen a significant increase in senior participation, with over 50 residents attending the weekly fitness classes at the local community center on Quezon Boulevard.
According to data from the Manila City Council, over 1,000 seniors have already registered for the free fitness program since its launch in January 2026. The program has also seen a significant reduction in hospitalization rates among participants, with a 25% decrease in admissions for cardiovascular diseases and a 30% decrease in admissions for diabetes. The council has allocated PHP 1.5 million to fund the program for the remainder of the year, with plans to expand the initiative to more locations and increase the frequency of classes. As of June 2026, the program has conducted 150 classes, with an average attendance of 20 participants per session.
For seniors interested in joining the program, registration is available at the Manila City Hall or online through the council's website. Classes are held Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM, and are open to all residents aged 60 and above. The council encourages participants to consult with their healthcare providers before starting any new exercise program. With the success of this initiative, the Manila City Council is exploring ways to expand the program to other age groups and demographics, further promoting a culture of wellness and fitness throughout the city.
